Suzanne Northcott . . . eggs,nests and feathers . . .

Biography

Suzanne Northcott is an interdisciplinary artist working with installation, video, painting and drawing.  She is interested in the shifting place where one thing becomes another, studying dreams and meditation and themes of transformation, decay, metamorphosis and migration.  This interest in the space between also manifests in her continuing history of collaborative work with poets, scientists and artists in other genres.

Northcott’s work is held in numerous collections including the Surrey Art Gallery’s public collection.  She is a sought-after lecturer and instructor; as workshop leader Suzanne often combines international cultural excursions with painting and yoga instruction.  She has been guest instructor at UBC, Capilano University, York University, Trinity Western University and the Langley Fine Arts School.

Recent publications include White Album (Innana Publications) a volume of Northcott’s paintings and Rishma Dunlop’s poetry launched in the fall of 2009.

In this workshop we will use the imagery of nest, feathers and eggs to explore mark making and surface texture with acrylics. You are welcome to introduce mixed media to your work if you wish. Each day will consist of short demos and lectures and lots of time to work on your own with Suzanne’s help. You will provide your own images or objects to work from. Note: Each student will be working in the materials of their choice and should bring what they are accustomed to working with and what they want to explore. The following is a guideline only: -Acrylic paints -Palette -Small containers for mixing paint -Selection of brushes -Gesso -Acrylic Medium – gel or liquid, gloss or matte -Stretched canvas, cradled wood panels or Masonite boards -Rags -Source material to jump off from (drawings, photos, ideas, objects) -Sketchbook or notebook -Drawing materials (graphite, charcoal, pastel, etc.) -Mixed media materials (metal leaf, collage) -photocopies for image transfer (please take the time to research a source that will work, i.e.., toner rather than ink) - Specialized acrylic mediums such as self leveling gel, tar gel, texture medium -Applicator for texture medium (wide scraper or trowel) -“fineline” applicator bottles for line work
